What am I looking at?

Get used to asking that question. This site is a random website generator, dedicated to sending you to a random corner of the internet. You may learn something, you may see something interesting, you will probably see something in a language you cannot read (see the filters). I hope you can find enjoyment in the true purpose of the internet: stumbling upon something new and wasting all of your free time.

How does it work?

A polite, honest, rule-following web crawler gathers sites from across the internet and records some basic information: page title, language, whether the site is alive. A quality gate script drops the junk, and yes that includes sites that contain images of people's junk. What remains is a collection of reviewed and approved sites that shows what's out there if you're willing to look.

Why?

I wanted a site that actually blasts you across the internet in a way that bypasses the corporate slop (or most of it) and leaves only the gems (random sites probably made by humans)
I was experimenting with Scrapy in college and naturally I got drawn in by all of the random information on the internet that you can find with enough effort (or scripting)

Are these questions frequently asked?

No. As of this writing, nobody has asked me anything. I have an unreasonable fear of getting put on the spot and not being prepared. It's not a good look. I'm now going to close my eyes and imagine the questions you might be asking.

Is there anything like StumbleUpon anymore?

You found it. StumbleUpon shut down in 2018, and people are still asking the internet for a replacement eight years later. Roll the Web is the same idea: one button, one surprise, minus the account, the ads, and the algorithm studying your taste. The button does not know you. If you want to get to know the button, right-click it and choose Inspect.

How is this different from The Useless Web?

The Useless Web is a rotation of deliberately useless websites, and it is great at that. This is a random website generator pointed at everything else: tens of thousands of real, living sites, with filters for category and country. Some of them are even useful. I apologize in advance for those.

Is it safe to open random websites?

Safer here than most places. The build filters out porn, gambling spam, parked domains, and dead pages before the app ever sees them, and the default pool only includes sites the crawler has verified alive. Beyond that I promise nothing. Welcome to the Internet.

Where do the sites come from?

A polite crawler that follows links outward and records what it finds, plus hand-picked lists from people who care about the small web: Kagi Small Web, the 512KB/250KB/1MB Clubs, personalsit.es, webrings, Neocities, and friends. Full credits are in the footer. The crawler respects robots.txt and knocks before entering. It was raised right.

Do you track what I click?

No. Not even close. No trackers, no analytics, no ads, no account. Saved sites and history stay in your browser and never leave it. I have no idea what anyone rolls on this site, and I prefer it that way.

Why do these questions sound like search queries?

Because they are. Nobody has asked me anything (see the first question), so I borrowed the ones people type into Google. If one of them brought you here, then it worked, and I would do it again.

Are your eyes still closed?

Nope! I had to open them after the first question so that I could type.
